French-Argentine actress Bérénice Bejo (pronounced [beʁenis beʒo]; born July 7, 1976) is well recognized for her roles as Peppy Miller in The Artist (2011) and Christiana in A Knight’s Tale (2001).
She won the César Award for Best Actress and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the latter. She was a 2013 Cannes Film Festival Best Actress winner and a César nominee for her role in The Past.
Bejo is the daughter of Argentine filmmaker Miguel Bejo and his lawyer wife Silvia. She was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her family fled Argentina’s most recent civil-military dictatorship (1976–1983) when she was three years old and relocated to France. Her father registered her at Les Enfants Terribles drama school.
She met director Michel Hazanavicius while filming OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies in 2006; the two eventually got married. Luis and Gloria are their two children.
