Alexander Medawar Garland is an English writer, director, and screenwriter who was born on May 26, 1970. He became well-known after publishing his book The Beach in 1996. In addition to Sunshine (2007) and Never Let Me Go (2010), he was praised for scripting the Danny Boyle movie Dredd (2012) and 28 Days Later (2002) and its sequel, 28 Years Later (2025). In video games, he served as a story supervisor on DmC: Devil May Cry (2013) and co-wrote Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (2010).
Ex Machina (2014), a sci-fi thriller that Garland wrote and directed, marked his directorial debut. In addition to winning three British Independent Film Awards—Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best British Independent Film—he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. His second film, Annihilation (2018), was a critical triumph and was based on the same-titled 2014 novel. The FX miniseries Devs (2020), the horror thriller Men (2022), and the dystopian action thriller Civil War (2024) were all written, directed, and executive produced by him. In addition, he co-directed the 2025 war movie Warfare. A24 produced the three films.
