Shanmugasundaram, renowned by his stage moniker A.V.M. Rajan, graced the realm of Tamil cinema during the vibrant decades of the 1960s and 1970s. Hailing from Pudukottai, his ardor for the cinematic arts burgeoned despite holding a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Madras University. Educated at the Christian Sweden Mission High School for his higher secondary, his familial aspirations envisioned him as a police officer. However, a twist of fate altered his trajectory when a fractured left hand, sustained at the age of 14, dashed his hopes of pursuing that path.
Undeterred, Rajan ventured to Madras, intent on realizing his celluloid dreams. Despite initial setbacks, his persistence paid off when he secured a breakthrough in the film “Aayiram Kaalathu Payiru,” debuting under the sobriquet “Raja B.A.” Subsequently, he found himself cast in AVM Productions’ “Naanum Oru Penn,” marking the genesis of his association with the esteemed production house and earning him the moniker ‘A.V.M.’ Rajan. Fate intertwined with romance when he crossed paths with Tamil actress Pushpalatha on set, culminating in their union and later marriage. Together, they graced the silver screen as a formidable pair, essaying memorable roles in numerous films, including the acclaimed “Karppooram” (1967), wherein Rajan’s stellar performance earned him the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor.
Yet, life’s journey took an unexpected turn when, on 19 January 1984, Rajan experienced a profound personal encounter that led to his conversion and subsequent embrace of full-time Christian ministry in 1988. Consequently, he bid adieu to his acting career, dedicating himself wholly to spreading the message of faith. His wife, Pushpalatha, a Catholic by birth from Coimbatore, joined him in this spiritual endeavor, alongside their two daughters. Together, they embarked on a path of service and devotion, their lives intertwined with the pursuit of spiritual fulfillment and the dissemination of divine grace.
