During the peak of the Telangana movement in pre-2014 Andhra Pradesh, there was criticism about the dominance of Andhra personalities in Telugu cinema, with accusations of monopolization. Even incidents where film crews were attacked occurred.
However, recently, a similar disagreement emerged when veteran music composer MM Keeravani was entrusted with composing the Telangana state anthem by the Revanth Reddy administration. The Telangana Musicians Association criticized this decision, citing Keeravani’s Andhra identity and suggesting the opportunity to go to a Telangana-origin musician.
While their concerns seem valid, criticizing Keeravani, who has brought pride to the Telugu community with his national and international recognition, seems unjustified. Such demands also reinforce viewing people through separate identities rather than celebrating their shared heritage.
Individuals like MM Keeravani belong not only to all Telugu people but also to all Indians. It’s important to recognize talent and contributions beyond regional identities and appreciate achievements that bring honor to the entire community.
