The Tamil movie industry is in a precarious situation now as most of the big budget movies that were released are not doing well at the box office. Movies such as Lal Salaam, Ayaalaan, and Captain Miller did not create a buzz but Aranmanai 4 featuring Tamannaah and Raashi Khanna was a hit.
To compensate for this slump, Tamil theaters are banking on films from other languages like Malayalam and Telugu, along with Hollywood franchises such as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Kung Fu Panda 4. Movies like Ghilli, the re-release of Vijay’s movie too helped the local exhibitors to some extent. The future of the industry lies with Indian 2, which is expected to bring major changes to the market.
Now that Kamal Haasan is back as Senapathy after 28 years, besides an ensemble cast, the movie is expected to open heavily internationally. It is expected to be released in many languages on 12th July. Based on the reputation of Kamal Haasan and the goodwill of the franchise, Indian 2 aims to gross 70 crores on its opening day and 150+ crores on the first weekend. Anything below these numbers would be seen as a failure.
