Fear is Vedhika’s new film has been promoted a lot in the last few days. Directed by Haritha Gogineni, the film has Pavitra Lokesh in a key role along with Anish Kuruvilla. The film was released today and let’s see what is the fate of the thriller.
Story: The story of Fear is showcased in three episodes. In one episode, a little kid is showcased spending time with other friends as she is alone. The next episode is of Sindhu(Vehdika) fearing that someone is after her and is ready to harm her. The third story has Vedhika again put up in a mental asylum waiting for her boyfriend. The common fact between these three stories is FEAR. What is the connection between these three stories and why is Sindhu is fear all the time? Read to know more.
Performances: Vedhika is known to portray only glamor-filled roles in her career. This role of Sindhu was a challenge for her and she did well to elevate the emotions. As the execution of the film is not that great, the character of Vedhika looks weak in the film. But the scenes where she is put up in a mental asylum were great to see and Vedhika gave a decent performance. Pavitra Lokesh is okay in her role and did her best. The actors who played the roles of kids were very good, especially those who played the roles of teenagers. Anish Kuruviall as the doctor was also great in his role and brings depth.
Technical Aspects: Fear is directed by Haritha Gogineni and she uses a linear screenplay. This creates confusion as well as an interest for the audience to know what is going on. The background score is not that great and could have been a lot better. The editing is bad as there are so many scenes that could have been chopped off. The camera work is just about okay but the production design is very good. The production values could have been a lot better. The dialogues are dull.
Analysis: Fear is a simple thriller with a thought-provoking theme centered around the consequences of parental neglect on children. The film attempts to narrate this concept through three interwoven stories that come together in the climax. Directed by Haritha, a doctor by profession, the story draws heavily from her understanding of the medical and psychological aspects of human behavior. Despite its interesting premise, the execution leaves much to be desired, making the film an uneven experience.
The first half of the film is particularly disappointing, lacking coherence and engagement. It primarily focuses on the heroine, Vedhika, searching for her boyfriend, Santosh. This storyline is dragged out unnecessarily, with repetitive and mundane sequences that fail to create any suspense or intrigue. Vedhika’s characterization as a helpless woman, constantly on edge and lost, feels exaggerated and does little to establish a connection with the audience. The narrative lacks purpose and urgency, leaving viewers struggling to stay invested.
The film’s pacing in the first half is a major drawback. The scenes feel disjointed, with little effort to build tension or develop the plot. Instead of engaging the audience with compelling storytelling, the first half feels like a collection of random events that do not seem to contribute much to the larger narrative. The absence of meaningful moments or impactful scenes results in a sense of boredom creeping in early on, which persists until the interval.
However, the second half of the film slightly redeems itself. The three individual stories begin to come together, and the central theme becomes clearer. The medical and psychological aspects of the narrative, which Haritha is passionate about, are handled with more care and precision. The message about the importance of parental attention and the detrimental effects of neglect is delivered effectively, though only toward the end. This socially relevant message is the strongest part of the film, leaving a lingering impression on the audience.
Verdict: Overall, Fear is a concept that is visible in today’s society. The message is also neat but the execution of the film leaves a lot to be desired making it a dull watch with not many thrills to engage.
Bottom Line: Lacks proper thrills
Rating: 1/5
