Copyright problems are becoming a major issue for filmmakers and streaming platforms in India. Many films and documentaries have been removed from OTT services because of disputes over songs, visuals or images used without proper approval. Courts have also been strict while the definition of “fair use” is still unclear.
Recently, Ajith Kumar’s Tamil film Good Bad Ugly was taken down from Netflix after a court order. Directed by Adhik Ravichandran and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, the film released in theatres on April 10th and started streaming on May 8th.
The issue began when music legend Ilaiyaraaja complained that the film used three of his songs, Ottha Ruba Tharen, En Jodi Manja Kuruvi, and Ilamai Idho Idho, without permission.
He demanded Rs. 5 crore and an apology before filing a case. As the producers failed to show proof of permission, the Madras High Court stopped its streaming.
Until the case is resolved, Good Bad Ugly will remain unavailable on Netflix.
