The Bombay High Court has cancelled a non-bailable warrant issued against actor Arjun Rampal in a 2019 tax case. The court called the magistrate’s order “mechanical” and “without proper thinking”.
The case is about delayed tax payment for the financial year 2016–17, based on a complaint from the Income Tax department.
Rampal had requested to skip personal court appearance through his lawyer, but the magistrate rejected the request and issued the warrant.
The High Court noted that the offence is a bailable one, with a maximum punishment of three years, and such a strong action was not needed.
Justice Advait Sethna also said that issuing a non-bailable warrant could unfairly harm Rampal’s reputation. His lawyer confirmed that the full tax amount was paid, just delayed, and there was no tax evasion. The High Court will continue to hear the case, with the next hearing scheduled for June 16th.
