Tollywood’s Dilemma: Beyond the Shadow of Rajamouli

Master filmmaker SS Rajamouli has undeniably transformed Telugu cinema in unimaginable ways, achieving a remarkable feat by being the only director with two Rs 1000 crore grossers – ‘RRR’ and ‘Baahubali 2.’ His monumental blockbusters opened up unexplored horizons for Telugu cinema, transcending boundaries and tapping into new markets.

Nevertheless, despite the industry’s growth, Tollywood still grapples with fully embracing the avenues Rajamouli unveiled. Six years since the groundbreaking ‘Baahubali 2,’ Tollywood’s reach has expanded across India, yet no other Telugu hero or director has crossed the Rs 500 crore mark at the Indian box office.

While films like ‘Saaho’ and ‘Pushpa 2’ made waves in the pan-Indian space, they fell short of the coveted milestone. The primary reason lies in the reluctance of elite Telugu directors to take progressive steps. Sukumar made strides with ‘Pushpa,’ but even he couldn’t have foreseen its pan-Indian appeal.

Notably, Trivikram has yet to explore pan-Indian prospects. Curiously, directors from other languages, such as Prashanth Neel and Atlee, have harnessed pan-India opportunities more effectively than their Tollywood counterparts, despite the ample resources available. As Rajamouli continues to break new ground, the Tollywood industry, as a whole, lags in fully embracing the potential it holds.
