A major reason people are avoiding theatres isn’t just poor content, it’s the high cost of tickets and snacks. With multiplexes becoming the norm, movie-going has turned expensive, especially for middle-class families.
As a result, many prefer watching films on OTT platforms or turn to piracy, which has hurt the film industry, particularly Bollywood and Tollywood.
While some filmmakers try to attract viewers with Rs. 99 ticket offers or ‘buy one, get one free’ deals, these are only short-term fixes.
At the Waves Summit 2025, Shah Rukh Khan suggested a long-term solution. He proposed setting up low-cost theatres in every town that screen Indian films in various languages, with ticket prices under Rs. 100.
He explained that while high prices might be fine for big films like RRR or Kalki, smaller movies shouldn’t follow the same model. Though implementing such a plan in a profit-driven industry is tough, it could bring back common audiences if taken seriously.
