In a big relief for Kamal Haasan the Supreme Court strongly criticized the Karnataka government for stopping the release of his film Thug Life over his comments about the Kannada language.
Kamal had said at an event that Kannada originated from Tamil which sparked controversy. Despite pressure from the Karnataka Film Chamber(KFC) and a request from the Karnataka High Court to apologize, Kamal refused.
Thug Life was released globally on June 5th but was not shown in Karnataka because of the issue. Though the film didn’t do well at the box office, missing out on Karnataka affected its opening collections.
The Supreme Court stated clearly that a film approved by the Censor Board (CBFC) has the right to be released, and blocking it was against the law.
The court also criticized the Karnataka High Court, saying it was wrong to ask Kamal to apologize, as it goes against freedom of speech.
