Recently, U.S. President Donald J. Trump said that America’s movie business is being taken away by other countries, comparing it to “stealing candy from a baby”.
He criticized California’s leadership and announced that a 100% tariff will be placed on all movies made outside the U.S.
This statement created a lot of discussion in film industries worldwide including the Telugu film industry, where people are worried about how this might affect their North America theatrical business.
If taken literally, two things could happen. The first one is that a distributor buying a foreign film for $1 million must also pay $1 million more in tax to the U.S. government, or the second one is that A ticket costing $10 could become $20 because of tax.
However, experts believe Trump’s words may not be applied exactly as said. Like with H1B visas, actual guidelines may differ.
For now, everything is speculation. The real impact on Telugu films will be clear only after the official rules are announced.
