Thug Life, the much-hyped film bringing together legends Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam failed to meet expectations at the box office.
Despite the star power the film couldn’t sustain its run beyond the initial weeks and didn’t cross the Rs. 100 crore mark globally.
Its performance in the Hindi market was especially poor and also a clear sign that the film didn’t connect with audiences outside its core regions.
To recover from the losses the makers decided to release the film on Netflix just four weeks after its theatrical debut.
This move broke the usual 8-week window followed in North India, leading to a Rs. 25 lakh fine from multiplex chains. The producers also gave up their remaining Hindi theatrical share.
Though packed with big names and high expectations, Thug Life shows that strong content is key to success today.
