Vijay Deverakonda teams up with director Rahul Sankrityan for Ranabaali, a period action drama that attempts to bring a lesser-explored chapter of Indian history to the big screen. Rashmika Mandanna plays the female lead, while Hollywood actor Arnold Vosloo appears as the antagonist. The film has released today and let’s review it here.

Ranabaali Story:

Set against the backdrop of the devastating famine of 1876–1878 in the Madras Presidency, Ranabaali follows Singanamala Bobbili Ranabaali (Vijay Deverakonda), a man who rises against British oppression to protect his people. The story explores how colonial policies, the exploitation of resources, and the British administration’s actions contribute to the suffering of ordinary Indians. Sir Theodore Hector (Arnold Vosloo), a British commissioner, becomes a central figure in the conflict as Ranabaali takes on the oppressive system.

Performances: Vijay Deverakonda takes on a challenging role that demands a considerable transformation from his familiar screen image. His appearance and attempt to adapt to the Kadapa slang deserve appreciation, and he puts sincere effort into portraying a rugged warrior. However, his body language occasionally appears stiff, particularly during action sequences.

Rashmika Mandanna is one of the film’s strongest assets. As Jayamma, she delivers a confident performance and handles the emotional scenes effectively. Her diction suits the setting, and her chemistry with Vijay adds warmth to the narrative.

Arnold Vosloo makes an effective antagonist. His imposing screen presence and controlled performance give the British officer a menacing quality. Easwari Rao performs adequately as Ranabaali’s mother, while Vinod Sagar makes good use of his role.

Technical Aspects: The technical departments bring considerable scale to Ranabaali. Jishnu Bhattacharjee and Nirav Shah’s cinematography captures the period setting effectively, with the cave fight sequence standing out for its visual treatment. The production design is another positive, creating a convincing backdrop for the story. Mythri Movie Makers deserves credit for mounting the film on a respectable scale.

Ajay-Atul’s music offers a mixed experience. The songs, particularly Endhayya Saami, have their moments and complement the period atmosphere. However, the background score does not consistently elevate the dramatic or action sequences.

Karthika Srinivas’ editing is adequate in the first half but becomes a concern later. Several sequences repeat similar ideas, making the narrative feel stretched. The nearly three-hour runtime could have been reduced by trimming at least 10–15 minutes from the second half. The visual effects are also uneven in places, especially during the Madras port sequence.

Analysis: Ranabaali deserves credit for attempting to explore the suffering caused by colonial policies and the devastating famine of the late nineteenth century. Rahul Sankrityan clearly wants to tell a story that goes beyond a conventional freedom struggle narrative, highlighting the exploitation of ordinary people and the consequences of historical injustice.

The first half is reasonably engaging once the film settles into its central conflict. The introduction of the British antagonist gives the narrative direction, while the sequences depicting the arrival of the British in the village and their treatment of the locals create some tension. The pre-interval episode is among the more effective stretches, giving the film a decent lift before the break.

The relationship between Vijay and Rashmika is another major plus. Their scenes feel natural, and the chemistry adds a personal dimension to a story dominated by oppression and resistance. The cave fight at the beginning of the second half is also a notable highlight, offering a strong visual and action-oriented sequence.

Unfortunately, the film loses its grip after this point. The screenplay begins revisiting familiar situations without adding enough new developments. The central conflict becomes repetitive, and the story moves forward at a sluggish pace. Several action sequences lack the emotional buildup necessary to make them genuinely powerful.

The problem is not the subject itself but the way it is presented. A story involving famine, hunger, and colonial brutality should leave the audience emotionally invested in the protagonist’s struggle. While the film communicates the scale of the suffering, it does not always make viewers feel that pain deeply. Even some important emotional developments fail to produce the intended impact.

Verdict: Overall, Ranabaali is an ambitious period drama with a meaningful premise, impressive production design, a good performance from Rashmika Mandanna. However, predictable writing, repetitive stretches, a lengthy second half, and a lack of sustained emotional impact weaken the overall experience. Watch it with low expectations.

Bottom Line: Could have been better

Rating: 3/5
