Kamal Haasan is currently promoting his upcoming film Thug Life, which is set to release on June 5th. However the film is caught in controversy after Kamal stated that the Kannada language evolved from Tamil.
This remark upset pro-Kannada groups in Karnataka, who have announced a ban on the movie. Though Kamal approached the High Court for protection, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce stood firm and refused to allow the screening.
When asked to apologize, Kamal declined, saying his statement came from love and “love does not apologize”. This further angered Kannada groups.
Chamber president Narasimhulu stated that even if Kamal goes to court, theatres in Karnataka won’t screen the film. He added that the issue has now become about language and state pride.
Meanwhile Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar responded calmly, asking everyone to stay patient and united. Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, stars Kamal Haasan, Simbu, Trisha, and others.
