Jailer 2 Movie Review & Rating!

Rajinikanth returns as Muthuvel Pandian in Jailer 2, bringing back the attitude, style, and screen presence that made the first film such an entertaining watch. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the film has Ramya Krishna and cameos by Mohanlal, Hrithik Roshan, and several others. Read our detailed review here.

Jailer 2 Story:

The story of Jailer 2 starts with Varma’s (Vinayakan) death. As the hunt for his killer intensifies, Muthuvel Pandiyan (Rajinikanth), who has been leading a peaceful life, finds himself drawn into the dangerous game. The film starts with a relatively simple setup and takes its time establishing the characters and their situations. How the likes of Muthuvel handle these crazy situations is the basic story of the film.

Performances: Rajinikanth is undoubtedly the film’s biggest asset. The superstar understands exactly what this character requires and delivers it with remarkable ease. His body language, expressions, dialogue delivery, and trademark mannerisms make even ordinary scenes watchable. Nelson allows Rajinikanth’s screen presence to do most of the work. Among the special appearances, Hrithik Roshan makes a relatively stronger impression.

Vidya Balan is very good in her negative role, and the likes of Shivraj Kumar, Mohanlal, and Jackie Shroff are wasted in brief appearances. S. J. Suryah is adequate, but his character lacks depth. Mithun Chakraborty is passable, while Suraj Venjaramoodu makes a decent impression. Ramya Krishnan performs well within the limitations of her role. Yogi Babu and Namo Narayana are good in their comic roles.

Technical Aspects: Anirudh Ravichander’s music and background score support the film’s commercial requirements. His work adds energy to several elevation scenes and action sequences and is the best part of Jailer 2. Vijay Kartik Kannan’s cinematography suits the film’s mood and action-oriented setting. The visuals are competent. It showcases the setup in a great manner.

The bridge and hotel fight sequences are well choreographed. Nirmal’s editing could have been tighter. Certain stretches feel unnecessarily prolonged, while some transitions lack smoothness. A sharper edit and a shorter runtime could have improved the film’s overall pace, especially in the latter half.

Analysis: Nelson Dilipkumar follows a familiar template in Jailer 2, banking on Rajinikanth’s charisma, humour, stylish action, and carefully placed commercial moments. The first half follows a breezy approach, with the tracks involving Moorthy and Yogi Babu providing most of the entertainment. The narrative moves towards a decent interval block, offering effective moments.

The second half introduces a more prominent conflict involving S. J. Suryah and his family. However, this track does not blend smoothly with the main story. The emotional portions feel forced, and the screenplay struggles to connect the different elements convincingly. Although there are a few action sequences and mass moments that work, the overall narrative fails to deliver a satisfying payoff.

The cameos are a major highlight, and fans will love them. The first Jailer benefited from the excitement surrounding its special appearances, but the sequel enhances it more. Several familiar faces turn up without making a substantial contribution, and their presence feels more forced than organic. But the film has enough entertaining stretches, particularly in the first half, to keep fans engaged.

While Rajinikanth remains the biggest strength, a weak second half and forced emotional sequences in the second half prevent the film from reaching its full potential. The film begins promisingly and offers a fair amount of fun before the interval, only to lose its grip when the story demands emotional depth. Ultimately, Jailer 2 is watchable largely because of Rajinikanth. The superstar delivers what is expected of him.

Verdict: Overall, Jailer 2 has an entertaining first half, with a terrific Rajinikanth carrying the film with his style and charisma. However, the weak second half stops the sequel from becoming a thoroughly satisfying entertainer. Still, Jailer 2 ends as a passable commercial entertainer, and Rajini fans will love it.

Bottom Line: Rajinikanth fans will love it
