Indian Premiere League has become one source of entertainment in Covid testing times for Indians and majority of cricket lovers all over the world. People wanted to see MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Rishab Pant kind of stars on the field with some young talents like Prithvi Shaw, Shivam Mavi, Shubman Gill, Yashashvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal along with veterans like AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell, Fuf du Plessis, Eoin Morgan, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Kieron Pollard, David Warner, Kane Williamson, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Pat Cummins take on each other representing their respective franchises.
More than in normal times, during 2020 and 2021 years, due to Covid pandemic, people needed an escape from depressing reality. But the Covid has managed to burst the bio-bubble that IPL management has created to ensure safe travels to conduct matches across different regions.
IPL management took a decision to host matches in only selected cities with adequate facilities like Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Kolkata. While Chennai and Mumbai matches did not get affected by Covid, the second phase of the tournament needed players to travel from the above mentioned cities to Ahmedabad and Delhi.
In the past two days, Kolkata Knight Riders players and support staff, Chennai Super Kings support staff and Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals players have announced that they have contracted Covid. Looking at the situation worsening further and further, IPL management has decided to suspended the IPL 2021 indefinitely.
It had always been an herculean task for the IPL management to hold matches during Covid time and the tournament might continue later if the situation in India returns to normalcy or comes under control. For now, we can say that the tournament for this year has been suspended and if it will ever be completed or if the management will take a decision to go with fresh start in 2022 along with Mega Auction remains to be seen.
