Sree Vishnu’s new film is Comrade Kalyan, an unusual comedy-drama set against the backdrop of Naxalism in the early 1990s. Directed by Janakiram Marella, the film has Mahima Nambiar, Satya, Radhika Sarathkumar, Shine Tom Chacko and Brahmaji in key roles. Read our review here.

Comrade Kalyan Story:

Kalyan (Sree Vishnu) is a fun-loving youngster whose love for Sitara (Mahima Nambiar) pushes him to find an unusual way to secure their future together. With a Rs. 5 lakh debt standing in the way of their marriage, he comes up with a risky idea to arrange the money quickly. Kalyan decides to infiltrate a Naxal group, planning to surrender to the authorities later and collect the government reward. But his clever scheme soon turns into a nightmare and lands him in deep mess.

Performances: Sree Vishnu is the film’s biggest strength. He looks comfortable in the unusual setup and handles the comic portions with ease. His attempt to balance a carefree young man’s behaviour with the tense atmosphere surrounding the Naxal group works in several scenes. However, the character needed more emotional depth to make the overall journey convincing.

Mahima Nambiar is decent as Sitara, but her character is poorly developed. The romance lacks depth, and she gets limited opportunities to make an impact. Satya is a major highlight. His expressions, body language and impeccable timing bring life to several scenes. Even when the story loses momentum, he manages to generate laughs.

Brahmaji is adequate as a police officer, while Shine Tom Chacko is loud and his exaggerated performance does not always work. Nellore Sudhakar manages a few laughs, but Upendra Limaye goes overboard in some portions. Sai Chand, Murali, Shatru, Prabhas Sreenu, Raghu Babu and Vennela Kishore have limited scope. Radhika Sarathkumar is underused as Sree Vishnu’s mother.

Technical Aspects: Vijai Bulganin’s music offers mixed results. While the songs do not leave a lasting impression, a few are reasonably effective. The background score supports the narrative without being particularly memorable. The cinematography is good, and the production design deserves appreciation for recreating the early 1990s.

The main problem lies with the writing. The premise has potential, but the screenplay does not develop the central conflict convincingly. The editing is adequate, though the second half would have benefited from tighter cuts. Several scenes could have been trimmed to maintain the pace.

Analysis: Comrade Kalyan has an idea that sounds interesting on paper: a man joins a Naxal group for personal gain, only to find himself in a dangerous situation. The comedy emerging from this unusual predicament could have made for an engaging entertainer. Unfortunately, the execution is inconsistent.

The first half takes time to find its rhythm, but things improve considerably when Satya enters the proceedings. However, the second half struggles to maintain the same energy. The romantic track is weak, and the emotional connection between the characters remains underdeveloped. The film repeatedly relies on comedy whenever the story begins to lose its grip, but this approach also weakens the seriousness of the Naxal backdrop.

The portrayal of the group and its response to an outsider joining its ranks lack the tension one would expect. Some situations also feel illogical, making it difficult to remain invested in the central conflict. Director Janakiram Marella deserves credit for attempting a different combination, but the film needed stronger writing and a more balanced treatment of comedy and drama.

Verdict: Overall, Comrade Kalyan delivers a handful of decent jokes but the weak story, underwhelming romance and lack of emotional depth hold the film back. The Naxal backdrop feels more like a setting for jokes than an integral part of the story.

Bottom Line: Only humor
