The New York Film Festival of AI movies (produced by Runway AI) is creating quite a buzz with its new perspective on story-telling. With an astounding 3,000 short film submissions, the festival chose 10 films that demonstrate the possibilities of AI-driven storytelling.
According to Anastasis Germanidis, Runway’s co-founder, there were various styles in the chosen movies and this demonstrates that AI filmmaking doesn’t have to follow a single trend. These films take the audience to the spectacularly magnificent worlds that bear resemblance to the “Inception” and “The Matrix” action movies.
Thanks to AI, filmmaking is now more accessible, and creators can now create high-quality content on a budget. With a simple command, platforms like Runway can be used to turn an image into an engaging video or a photo into a piece of art. Nonetheless, AI still falls short of perfect characters with multiple camera angles. The filmmakers like Leo Cannone, who was recognized at the festival, use AI tools together with manual editing to realize their visions.
Just recently, Runway came up with “General World Models”, a deep learning model that simulates a dynamic real-world environment. The founders of the studio, who are deeply involved in the art, dream of a society in which storytelling is percent different and available to all, rather than the mold of usual Hollywood.
