Renowned Assamese singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg has passed away at 52 after a scuba diving accident in Singapore. Authorities pulled him from the sea and took him to the hospital but doctors could not save him.
Zubeen had gone to Singapore to perform at the North East Festival. His sudden death has shocked many across India.
Over his decades long career he recorded thousands of songs in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and more. He gained national fame with the Bollywood hit ‘Ya Ali’ from Gangster (2006) but his impact in Assam was far greater.
A multi-talented artist, Zubeen was a singer, composer, actor, filmmaker and social advocate. His music celebrated the culture, emotions and spirit of the Northeast.
Fans, artists and leaders have called his loss ‘irreparable’ mourning a true symbol of Assamese pride.
