Meezaan Jafri, an actor in Yaariyan 2, as well as the directors have been detained by Punjab Police after allegations that their use of the Kirpan damaged people’s religious feelings.
Yaariyan 2, Divya Khosla Kumar’s upcoming movie, has stirred some controversy. The movie Saure Ghar, which stars Meezaan Jafri and Pearl V Puri, has released a new song with the title Saure Ghar. In the song, Meezaan can be seen wearing a kirpan, a religious object of the Sikh faith that is not permitted for usage in public for amusement.
The Shithe Romani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) filed a FIR against the filmmakers and Meezaan for injuring religious sensibilities after the song’s release because the Sikh Community found the scene offensive.
The creators and Meezaan Jafri afterwards apologised, claiming that their intention was not to offend anyone’s religious sentiments. They also expressed their deepest respect for all cultures and religious convictions in their public apology. The aforementioned images have been changed and eliminated from the movie.
According to a report by Free Press Journal, Meezaan Jafri is reportedly sporting a Khukri rather than a Kirpan in the aforementioned scene from Yaariyan 2. For the uninitiated, there is a religious procedure that must be completed before one can wear a kirpan in the Sikh religion.
The website quoted SGPC, which said, “The Sikhs very well know the shape of a ‘kirpan’ and a ‘khukri’, and the way both are worn on one’s body. We are not satisfied with your illogical clarification. Therefore, we are initiating the process of legal action in this case, as the concerned video song is still in public view and continuously hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikh community.”
According to reports, Punjab police are currently in Mumbai trying to detain Meezan Jafri and the Yaariyan 2 filmmakers following the filing of a complaint with the Amritsar Police Commissioner in the aforementioned incident.
In a previous tweet, the SGPC raised the issue and urged harsh action be taken against Radhika Rao, Vinay Sapru, Meezaan Jafri of Yaariyan 2, Bhushan Kumar, and others. As stated in the tweet, “We have requested harsh action against these filmmakers for hurting religious sensibilities of Sikh community throughout the globe by displaying non-Sikh, clean-shaven actor Meezaan Jafri wearing a ‘kirpan’ — Sikh Kakaar (symbol of Sikh faith) — in a manner similar to Amritdhari Sikhs. At all costs, disrespect for Sikh Maryada (behaviour), custom, and way of life is not acceptable. The producers intentionally presented Sikh Kakaar Kirpan in a bad way, disregarding religious sensibilities, in order to acquire publicity and earn financially.
Additionally, the appeal sought that all social streaming websites, including Youtube, where the song Saure Ghar was released, as well as the offending song and scenes from the movie be removed.
