Many speculations have been going around about the Indian Government’s decision to re-open theatres since, July. Late in June, many news reports have suggested that the theatres could re-open from 2nd week of July. Later, reports suggested that from August, theatres could re-open. In September, Indian Government gave permission for open air theatres like drive-ins to start operations from 20th of September. Now, the news reports again state that from October, theatres might get permission to operate on 30-50% occupancies or 50-70 patrons allowed per show.
Theatre managements have requested Indian Government to let them open then businesses and operate with conditions rather than shutting them down, fully. They have stated that from past six months, many families that are dependent on the theater business as their primary income source are suffering huge losses. Hence, the news reports state that from 5th of October, theatres could open in India with limited occupancy rates allowed and many safety guidelines to be thoroughly followed. If they open, many small budget to medium budget film producers are ready to release their films in theaters and sell them off to OTT platforms based on the response.
