Despite the remarkable success of Tollywood’s Baahubali and KGF series in the Hindi market, Tamil Cinema (Kollywood) struggles to replicate the feat. While movies like Rajinikanth and Shankar’s “2 Point 0” garnered attention, Tamil films are largely unable to capture the North Indian market.
Unlike their Telugu and Kannada counterparts, Kollywood hasn’t produced a 1000Cr box office hit, even though it’s considered a major industry in India. The aspiration to join the 1000Cr club remains unfulfilled for Tamil filmmakers, as the Northern market’s support is essential for achieving this milestone.
Although Tamil Cinema holds regional prominence and is larger than Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam industries, it’s been challenging to make a significant mark in North India. Hopes were pinned on films like Vikram, Ponniyin Selvan series, and Rajinikanth’s recent release, “Jailer.”
Unfortunately, these attempts have not translated into North Indian success, leaving Kollywood behind its regional counterparts. For now, Tamil filmmakers continue to navigate the complex landscape of Hindi cinema in their pursuit of achieving remarkable box office figures.
