Why Bharathiraja Returned A Prestigious National Award

Following the passing of Bharathiraja, many are recalling not only his contribution to cinema but also his strong convictions on some social issues.

Known for creating classics and introducing great talent to Tamil cinema, Bharathiraja never hesitated to express his views.

One of the most significant moments in his life came in 2009 when he returned the Padma Shri award which he had received in 2004 as a protest against the suffering of Sri Lankan Tamils during the final phase of the civil war.

He was actively participated in long rallies, awareness campaigns and public movements supporting the Tamil cause without fail. He even brought together members of the industry for protests and demonstrations.

Beyond filmmaking he was more respected for standing firmly by his beliefs and speaking out on issues he cared about deeply.
