The movies and casino gaming have long had a connection, perhaps because many casino games are based around a single moment of chance or involve high stakes, both of which fit well with the drama demanded by movie audiences around the world.
Not all games are equal when it comes to movies, however, and some games definitely have more appeal to movie makers and audiences, in Hollywood and Bollywood. Roulette
The distinctive roulette wheel has long been associated with casinos and roulette has featured in many movies. As the archetypal casino game, roulette appears incidentally in many movies, but has also been the subject of several, including California Split (1974), Indecent Proposal (1993), German movie Run Lola Run (1998) and Croupier (1998).
The most famous use of roulette in a movie is probably Casablanca (1942) starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Bergman’s character Ilsa and her husband are fleeing the Nazis and a game of roulette provides a pivotal plot point as the drama heightens.
Teen Patti
Teen Patti, or Three Cards, is one of the most popular Indian card games, indeed, is played across Asia. With similarities to poker and three-card brag, it is a game of skill and gambling, though luck also plays a significant role. It also holds the distinction of being one of the few casino games to have a movie named after it.
The movie came out in 2010 and stars Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley. It tells the story of a maths genius who has developed an equation that effectively refines probability and the notion of randomness. He is encouraged to implement the equation in the real world, playing Teen Patti in Mumbai, though the results, as you might expect, do not turn out as expected.
Baccarat
Baccarat may not have the same high profile as Roulette, but it has provided the inspiration for several movies, most notably the two versions of Casino Royale, the first-ever adventure for MI6 agent James Bond, the first of which starred Woody Allen and David Niven and was released in 1967 and the second, which marked the successful debut of Daniel Craig as Bond in 2006.
The link between Baccarat and Bond extended to two further movies involving the card game: Dr No (1964) and Goldeneye (1995) and it also featured in Rush Hour 3 (2007).
Andar Bahar
An extremely popular game across South Asia, Andar Bahar is a casino game based around chance and played with a single deck of cards, in which players attempt to predict which box the Joker will land in, although this simple foundation supports a host of refinements and additions.
As well as being a well-known casino game in Asia, Andar Bahar has the distinction of having two movies named after it. The first was released in 2010, and featured Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff as a criminal and a police inspector who team up to catch an escaped gangster.
The second Andar Bahar movie came out in 2013, starring Shiva Rajkumar and Parvathy and is a thriller telling the story of a criminal and his wife. Neither movie made much of an impression at the box office, but both underlined the popularity of this game across India.
PokerWhen it comes to casino games in the movies, however, no other game can match poker, in its various versions, though Texas Hold ‘Em and Five Card Draw are the most common forms of the game to make the silver screen, as the game combines skill with thrilling moments and the drama that comes with high stakes and high risks.
The purest poker movies are Rounders (1998) which stars Matt Damon as an ambitious young poker player attempting to prove himself, and The Cincinnati Kid (1965), which offers an uncompromising portrait of the life of a professional poker player. Poker also plays a prominent role in more than 20 other movies, including Mississippi Grind (2015), Molly’s Game (2017) and Smart Money (1931).
