What Happened When Priyanka Chopra Supported SRK’s Dilwale?

Priyanka Chopra earlier wrote a lengthy essay on Twitter against the needless boycott demands made in relation to the films Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani.

Politicians and extremist religious groups have always had a soft spot for Bollywood. Due to this, several prominent films have suffered greatly. One such incident occurred around the release of Deepika Padukone’s, Ranveer Singh’s, and Priyanka Chopra’s Bajirao Mastani and Shah Rukh Khan, and Kajol’s Dilwale.

Both films competed at the 2015 Diwali box office, confusing the uninitiated. Both films, which cost over 100 crores, performed admirably at the Indian box office. It wasn’t a typical release, though, since both big-name films encountered protesters outside of theatres, as was widely reported in India. There were far too many hurtful remarks made about these films, even on social media.

Numerous religious organizations criticized Bajirao Mastani for misrepresenting Hindu history and insulting Hindu faith and culture. Shah Rukh Khan’s comments on religious intolerance for Dilwale, however, drew all the criticism. Priyanka Chopra finally spoke out about this by sharing a lengthy article on Twitter about pointless boycott calls.

Priyanka Chopra wrote, “I can’t help staying silent on this anymore. It’s too sad to see how films and actors become political.” She continued, “I can’t help staying silent on this anymore. It’s too sad to see how films and actors become political pawns! Bans based on baseless propaganda. Holding films ransom just before they release so that publicity can be garnered for certain agendas by forcing a producer to their knees. How does no one speak up for what is right? How is this fair? Do people think films r just fun and games to make?! They r made with blood sweat and tears for entertainment!! Pls, stand by the filmmakers who put in their life’s money and hard work to make people laugh and smile. Don’t let them be blackmailed and threatened by holding their films ransom just before release.”

Priyanka Chopra acknowledged that she was aware of the impact of her words, but she also said that she could no longer remain silent.

“Speak up before if there is an issue!! Everyone has a right to an opinion. The timing right before release just seems very suspect!! I know I may get into trouble for saying all this but I can’t be a silent witness to character defamation based on opinions anymore. That is not what, the India I grew up, taught me,” the actress quoted.
