PS-2, the second installment of the last year released high budget period drama starring Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Karthi,Trisha Krishnan,
Jayam Ravi among others in key roles has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it fares.
Story: The second part of Ponniyin Selvan starts with Megastar Chiranjeevi’s voiceover. Opens with Buddhists and Vallavaraiyan saving Arunmozhi,
Nandini, and Pandyan groups seeking revenge on Aditya for Veerapandyan’s murder and Madhuranthakan and his Shiva Bakth’s followers aiming for Chola throne.
What happens to Aditya Karikalan and Nandini? Will Madhuranthakan gets the supreme chair of the Chola kingdom, forms the rest of tale.
Performances: Karthi, Vikram, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Sobhita Dulipala, Aishwarya Rai, Nassar, Prabhu, Prakash Raj, jayaram did justice to their roles.
The film is made on a large scale and the grandeur is to be visible on big screens. Maniratnam has succeeded in presenting this story of Cholas dynasty on a grand scale.
But the drama factor doesn’t suits for all language audiences. Especially, for the Telugu audience who expect commercial highs in the narration.
Adding to it, the narration is slow and makes the audience feel bored many times throughout the movie.
The pace of the film is a mismatch with the grandeur and rich visualisation.
Technicalities: The music composed by AR Rahman is okay but worthy mentioning here. The music is not up the mark compared to his previous works.
The photography work by Ravi Varman is soothing as he captured the set work is an outstanding manner.Editing work needs to serious cut as many unwanted scenes can be chopped off easily.
Production values are okay and so is the case with the production design work.
The Telugu version dialogues fails to create an impact. The art work is visible on screen. The VFX and graphics work is presented on screen in an authentic manner.
Analysis: Though the pace is still somewhat flat and slow, the drama is unfolded in an interesting way and a lot of missing pieces in the 1st part are starting to make sense.
To summarize, the film is an original content made based on the novel written by Tamil poet.
Compared to the first part second installment is quite better but overall is a flat and boring watch for the audience who has no idea about Tamil history and Chola dynasty.
Verdict: Passable fair!
Rating: 3/5
