DD Returns Movie Review and Rating

Santhanam and Surabhi star in DD Returns, a 2023 Tamil comedy-horror film with supporting roles and other actors.

DD Returns is directed by S. Prem Anand.

Story : DD Returns follows the Fernandes family's paranormal experiences.

Ghosts eagerly await a playmate after burglars broke into their house, unable to leave until they found the only exit.

If they can’t locate the door, they will either be slain by the ghosts or remain trapped inside the mansion forever.

Santhanam and his team overcome ghosts' challenges, locating the door and leaving the house, despite the movie's inevitable denouement, resulting in drama.

Protagonists' handling of ghosts, Santhanam's comedic timing, and crew's handling of paranormal components significantly enhance movie suspense.

The movie showcases well-known comedians, including Munishkanth, Redin Kingsley, Pazhaya Joke Thangadurai, and Motta Rajendran, who all excel in making humor work in the film.

Even stuntwoman Dheena’s persona gradually develops into a humorous one, which is delightful to see.

Technicalities : Single song with strong Parrys Jeyaraj aftertaste elevates game segments' mood above horror template themes.

The cinematographer effectively maintained a consistent color scheme, capturing well-executed maze segments and library scenes.

Maintaining a 2-hour time limit ensures crisp editing, while higher-quality CGI output may enhance visual appeal.

Analysis : The first 20 minutes introduce the ghostly setting and characters, presenting a mixed-bag story with mixed stretches, aiming for a greater purpose.

The movie effectively connects over a dozen main characters through absurdist sections, clever language timing, and practical jokes.

It showcases the effectiveness of humor in a persuasive manner.

The first half is amusing, with some funny spots, such as ghosts saying the smoking card and the connection between Dhillikku Dhuddu.

The second part resembles a game show with varied sequences and incorporated humor in the screenplay.

The film follows cinema conventions, with regular jokes and smooth narrative flow covering some shortcomings.

Despite lack of logic, it follows conventions without being inanely treated by spectators.

Verdict :  The humour mostly succeeds, though there are a few spots where the gags fall flat.

Rating : 2/5
