Vir Das Opens Up On Career Struggles After ‘Two Indias’ Controversy

In 2021 Vir Das faced major backlash for his video “I Come From Two Indias”. Speaking in an interview, Vir opened up about how that controversy changed his life.

He shared that he moved to Goa after the backlash. “You can’t write stand-up in Goa” he said explaining that he needed to feel the audience’s vibe which wasn’t possible there.

While he liked Goa’s peaceful and non-judgmental nature he realized he was running away and decided to return to Mumbai.

Vir admitted that after the controversy he didn’t get any work for over a year. His phone stopped ringing. “If it did, it wasn’t for work. People were angry,” he laughed. During this phase, he created his Netflix special Vir Das: Landing, which won an Emmy and revived his career.

He also recalled boarding a London flight and forgetting how he got there, after doing 186 shows abroad, and later needed therapy for exhaustion and memory loss.
