Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, remembered for his role as the professor in 3 Idiots, passed away on Monday in Maharashtra at the age of 91.
He was admitted to Jupiter Hospital due to health issues and though the exact cause of death is not confirmed, reports say it was age-related.
Before films, Potdar had a remarkable career. He served as a captain in the Indian Army, later worked as a professor and then spent 25 years with Indian Oil Corporation before retiring in 1992. At 44, he stepped into Bollywood and went on to become one of the most familiar character actors.
In his career Potdar acted in over 125 films and nearly 100 TV shows, often playing professors, doctors, or fatherly figures. His famous line ‘Kehna kya chahte ho’ from 3 Idiots remains iconic.
Tributes poured in from fans and filmmakers praising his warmth and humility. His funeral will be held in Thane on August 19.
I was a fan of his character as Jaggu dada’s father. The line “Ae Jaggu” from “Angaar” made me his permanent fan. Was a privilege to have directed him in my directorial debut “Jayate”. He played a professional medical witness. Amazing timing and a super caustic sense of humour.… pic.twitter.com/xxf82E4PMb
