Varudu Kavalenu: A hope towards strong female characterisation

Strong female characters have never been the strongest point of Telugu cinema, despite there existing several films with strong characters in the past. In contemporary cinema though, with Tollywood being mostly focused on commercial cinema, female characters have been limited for glamour show and songs, rarely being given something substantial to work with. However, with changing times, characteristics are also being changed, with stronger female characters being written in Telugu cinema.

One of the most promising characters that fits the bill, in the recent times, is Sai Pallavi’s Mounika in the upcoming film Love Story, directed by Sekhar Kammula. Kammula has been known for writing powerful, strong, yet feminine characters in all of his films so far, and is famous for it. As a result, there are good expectations for Sai Pallavi’s character in Love Story.

The other film that is raising hopes in this angle is the upcoming film Varudu Kaavalenu, written and directed by Lakshmi Sowjanya, featuring Naga Shourya and Ritu Varma in the lead roles. The teaser of the film ahs been released today, which has thrown a new light on the film, showcasing its female lead to be an independent woman, with a mind of her own. Considering this, looks like Ritu Varma’s character is going to be a treat to watch on the big screen, hopefully turning out to be one of the strongest female characterisations in Telugu cinema.
