Uppena is one movie that has created a lot of buzz of late. Uppena marks the debut of Panja Vaisshnav Tej, Krithi Shetty. It is also the debut movie of the director Buchi Babu who is a protege of Sukumar. Devi Sri Prasad’s songs are on the top-notch and all of them became chartbusters. Though it is a film of debutants, there is a lot of hype, thanks to the rumors about the climax. Let us have a look at how the film is.
Plot: There is nothing new to say about the story. It goes with the regular template of a poor hero who falls in love with a rich heroine who also has a strong family background. The film is all about Sesharayanam (Vijay Sethupathi) who loves his caste more than anyone else and feels like his daughter Bebamma (Krithi Shetty) is his pride. Aashi (Vaisshnav Tej) belongs to the fisherman community. He loves Bebamma from his childhood who later reciprocates the same.
The rest of the story is about the conflict between Rayanam and the pair who are deep in love.
Performances: Everyone should definitely commend Vaisshnav Tej for picking a subject like this. Though it is a regular love story, the ending is a daring attempt. It is the first time that this kind of ending is shown in Tollywood. He picked up a de-glam role for his debut project. Vaisshnav Tej has given a decent performance. Krithi Shetty is another find in Tollywood. She looks cute and her performance is matured. Towards the climax, she has done a superb job.
Vijay Sethupathi has again shown his versatility. He has transformed into the role of Rayanam very efficiently. The only complaint is that his dubbing doesn’t suit him perfectly (as we all are familiar with his voice). Saichand is effective as well. The rest has played their roles to perfection.
Technicalities: Technically Uppena is very strong. Uppena is Devi Sri Prasad’s comeback movie. He has done a superb job. All the songs are composed beautifully and the picturization is effective as well. Cinematographer Shamdut has given superb visuals. The production values should be appreciated. They spent a hefty amount irrespective of the fact that it is the hero’s debut film. Editing is fine.
Director Buchi Babu Sana proved that he is the right protege of Sukumar. Though the story is routine, his writing is brilliant. The way he conceived climax is too good. However, there are consistency issues he needs to work out on.
Analysis: Uppena is another heart-touching love entertainer. The dialogues are one of the major plus points in the film. The first half is excellent with a good flow of romantic moments. All the chart-buster songs come in this half. The interval episode was shot well. The second half is a dull affair. If not for the daring attempt in the climax, Uppena could have ended up as an average flick. However, Uppena is definitely a good one time watch.
