Baahubali tops any list when it comes to Telugu Cinema. The movie franchise had a beast run, thanks to the kind of euphoria that the first one created with a big twist in the climax. That one twist helped the second one to bring-in massive crowds and generate huge buzz for the film. The buzz was so high that even people who gave up on watching films in theaters, entered into theatres to watch the film.
Movie at Overseas saw rush among Non-Telugu speaking people has well. Even foreigners showed interest in watching the film as the movie trailers and talk compelled them to do so. No, Indian film could ever repeat the feet of earning 21 Million from US market, post Baahubali, even with biggest stars in big budget films.
The first film of any franchise has a tough task of setting up characters and then it has to tell a story that is compelling enough for next films to work big at the Box Office. Baahubali did a phenomenal job in setting up great franchise and the world created by SS Rajamouli and his team is revered so much that the people are waiting for the saga to continue with original cast, in some fashion.
At USA, North Indian audiences went to watch the film and fell in love with it, big time. It is the power of word of mouth that helped the next film to achieve even bigger success at the box office. The war episode and huge first song, have become highlights of the film for many to watch it in repeats.
Sukumar always hoped to repeat the sensation that Arya created at the box office but he failed at some or the other aspect in his consecutive films until Rangasthalam to achieve such amount of success again. His 1 Nenokkadine was the best candidate to set records but it couldn’t as the screenplay had issues.
Sukumar did not bog down with such failures or borderline successful films and decided to learn them. He delivered his best with Rangasthalam in terms of character based writing and plot driven screenplay. Hence, Rangasthalam could become the biggest hit for Ram Charan and even for Telugu Films other than Baahubali in USA, proving that the market has grown big enough.
Ala Vaikuntapurramuloo has become the biggest hit for director Trivikram Srinivas and actor, Allu Arjun. The movie strongly established Trivikram Srinivas brand in the market and his next might open with record numbers, if situation returns to some kind of normalcy in coming years.
Movie became such a hit that trade pundits got confused how to look into it and deduce the market strength. Before this film release, big films started suffering due to OTT platforms surge and release of films on these platforms in just few weeks post theatrical release. But this film makers strategized a good theory to bypass that and the content also helped them put up such a humongous show at the box office. Unfortunately, we may not see such phenomenal numbers from USA for a while due to the Covid pandemic.
Mahesh Babu is the biggest star among the stars in USA and his comeback hit, Bharat Ane Nenu proved it. Even though there was a film like Rangasthalam putting on a phenomenal display of strength, Bharat Ane Nenu did not back out and created history. It is not easy to see two films collect close to 3.5 Million at USA at same time but they could do so.
Bharat Ane Nenu had to run on the strength of Mahesh Babu’s box office pull and Koratala Siva’s writing, execution. It had a rather regular story to go with and wasn’t a special effort from the team like other films to really put up such huge numbers. Hence, the movie is real testimony of Mahesh’s strength as a box office hero in USA.
Prabhas film after Baahubali 2 will be big at the box office. Everyone could predict but how big? No one had any clue. Saaho team tried to match the grandeur of Baahubali films but their decision to concentrate on visuals did not help the film become a phenomenal success at the box office that many wished for.
Still, a 3.23 Million USD mark is not hit by every Telugu film in USA, so effortlessly. Prabhas needs a film with strong story and we can’t imagine what numbers he can put up in the market. But to know his real strength at the box office with a good film, we may have to wait for one or two years, for situation to return to normalcy.
Koratala Siva after a hit like Mirchi had to wait for two years to make Srimanthudu and Mahesh Babu gave him full freedom to deliver a film, that the maker believes in big time. Result is a record breaking success at box office, excluding Baahubali films. Even this film too had to survive the wave of Baahubali and even worse the after-effects of such a phenomenal success could have halted the prospects of the film.
But it managed to top the list after Baahubali during its release. As it continues to be in Top Ten even after 5 years of its release, you can imagine how phenomenally successful it was when it released. Devi Sri Prasad’s music helped the film to sustain audiences interest, even though Baahubali kind of a juggernaut threatened to swallow it.
Megastar Chiranjeevi’s box office pull with Telugu crowds at bay, can never be underestimated. The actor is a household name and he will remain for years to come. While his comeback film, Khaidi No. 150 showed his strength at the box office, Sye Raa just became a solid proof that Telugu people will watch his films for sure.
Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy couldn’t achieve the Baahubali range success as fans wanted but it did manage to put up a show at the box office that they can be proud off. At a time, when recession hit USA market had slowed down returns, this film gave a hope with big numbers to producers.
It is hard to imagine a film like Mahanati prior to release, will secure such huge numbers at the box office. The movie came out with least number of expectations and it delivered huge time surprising everyone. Nag Ashwin the director, Keerthy Suresh, Dulquer Salmaan and Samantha Akkineni showed that good content that is well-executed, can draw audiences to theaters like moth to flame.
The movie was able to put up such numbers even though films like Rangasthalam and Bharat Ane Nenu had extended runs at the box office. The film has opened up big possibilities for producers, directors to bet high based on the strength of the content and not just on star power.
Biggest surprise success of all the films is Geetha Govindam. No one expected an upcoming actor’s film to go on and collect 2.45 Million USD at the box office but audiences loved the content and Vijay Devarakonda – Rashmika Mandanna pairing.
Movie doesn’t have a high concept or great story but the execution by Parasuram helped it to achieve such phenomenal success, without a doubt. It is a testimony for the power of content at the highest level.
