With the onslaught of the second wave of coronavirus, all theatres have had to shut down once again in the country. However, before the second wave started its devastating rampage, Tollywood became a trendsetter for every other film industry in the country. Of course, Kollywood too released films post lockdown but wasn’t as successful as Tollywood.
Theatres in the Telugu states started showcasing films from December 25th, with Solo Brathuke So Better being the first Telugu film to release in theatres post lockdown. Despite releasing at 50% theatre capacity, SBSB managed to be profitable for the makers, and audiences rushed to the theatres to watch the film. Ravi Teja’s Krack released for Sankranthi this year, and despite the 50% occupancy, the film turned out to be a blockbuster. Then there were hits like Uppena, Naandhi, Red, Zombie Reddy, Jaathiratnalu, Rang De, etc., that turned out to be box office successes as well.
All in all, if the quality of the content is one reason for Tollywood to have performed so well after the lockdown, then the willingness of the Telugu audiences, and their love for cinema are the main reasons why Tollywood performed exceptionally after lockdown. Here’s hoping Tollywood will once again get back to a resounding success, and that the second wave of coronavirus ends soon.
