The Bengali director, who popularised Indian cinema around the world, received two National Awards for Pather Panchali, his directorial debut. Later, he won numerous national accolades for his other films, notably the hugely successful Sonar Kella. In 1994, Ray received his final National Award for Best Screenplay for the film Uttoran.
In the course of his 40-year career, Satyajit Ray earned 35 National Awards, including six for best director. He also received honours for best film, editing, screenplay, and other categories. In addition, Ray was recognised for Best Documentary (Inner Eye, 1972) and Best Children’s Film (Joi Baba Felunath, 1978). For nine Bengali films, he received the Best Feature Film award. Sonar Kella, his film, had previously taken home six National Awards, a record at the time, including three for him: Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Feature Film in Bengali.
In addition to this, the director has garnered countless accolades for nearly all of his films on both national and international stages. Following Satyajit Ray, directors Mrinal Sen (18 National Awards) and Adoor Gopalakrishnan (17 National Film Awards) are in second and third place, respectively, behind Satyajit Ray.
