The Story Behind Sukumar’s Item Numbers

At the 20th anniversary event for the film Arya in Hyderabad, creative director Sukumar shared insights, notably about the item song ‘Aa Ante Amalapuram’. He mentioned that despite his reluctance to include such songs, producer Dil Raju insisted, leading to its creation. Sukumar admitted to not liking some lyrics and missing out on a star heroine due to budget constraints.

However, actress Abhinayasri delivered a standout performance. Interestingly, although Dil Raju abandoned item songs in subsequent films, Sukumar found himself incorporating them for commercial reasons. Despite his initial reluctance, Sukumar’s item numbers, like Ringa Ringa, London Babu, and Oo Antava, showcase his creativity in integrating them into his films.

It’s surprising to learn that Sukumar, known for his artistic vision, now sees item songs as a commercial necessity rather than a personal preference. This evolution reflects the dynamic nature of the film industry, where creative decisions often intersect with commercial considerations.
