Many of Shatrughan Sinha’s films starred Sanjeev Kumar. There was, however, a tie between them that extended beyond their professional affiliation.
On June 9, the anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar’s birth, Shatrughan Sinha remembers the actor who could play any role, from mutant in Chehre Pe Chehra to mute in Koshish.
Sanjeev Kumar possessed an unequalled talent. Balki said, “We saw nothing of his talent when he passed away.” Yeh kahunga ke humne kuch bhi nahin dekha. He had such a commanding presence on television. I had the honour of working on multiple films with him. I can immediately think of Beraham and Bad Aur Badnaam. Sunil Dutt Saab was planning to direct another movie that had us in it. It was never produced. We were also present when Sanjeev, who we referred to as Haribhai, made his final appearance in Qatl. Then he abruptly passed away and left us.
Shatrughan Sinha sighs, “He passed away after a heart attack. I would argue that he passed away as a result of a broken heart. Lekin mein toh kahunga unki maut dil tootne se hui. Love was plentiful in Haribhai’s life. The issue was that the women he adored did not adore him in return. And despite being adored, he did not reciprocate. In addition, I believe he only wanted to wed women who would win his mother’s approval. Haribhai loved food a lot. He adored all types of food. Every lady who coveted his affection prepared meals for him.
Another thing helped Sanjeev Kumar and Shatrughan Sinha become friends.
Shatrughan Sinha chuckles, “I get what you’re saying. We were both renowned for arriving to the sets late. About him, I know nothing. However, I arrived late due to a sleep disorder. I then practised yoga after waking up.
