Young director Naga Ashwin, made a refreshing debut with Nani’s Yevade Subramanyam. After that he flirted with the idea of making a film based on legendary actress Savitri’s life story. Savitri, who earned a place in the hearts of Telugu and Tamil audience with her memorable portrayals in classics like Pasamalar, Kandan Karunai, Devadasu, Mayabazaar, Aradhana, Ardhangi, Donga Ramudu, Gundamma Katha, Missamma and many more, led an illustrious life.
She was introduced to screen as a dancer in Pathala Bhairavi and her portrayal of Parvathi aka Paru in Devadasu made her famous. With the films like Donga Ramudu, Mayabazaar, Mangalya Balam, Devatha, Missamma proved her versatility and stayed in the hearts of Telugu audience. She was introduced into Tamil with Missamma remake and there she fell in love with her husband, Gemini Ganesan and eloped with him. After the marriage, they had a girl child and Gemini Ganesan married several other women too. This development had some affect on her psychic and she took to drinking. She succumbed to cancer and by the time of death, she was reduced to living alone.
Actually, how much of this story would be exactly represented on screen can only be known once we watch the movie. Interesting casting coup is that actor Suriya has been approached to play Gemini Ganesan and the director gave him a narration already. The actor showed interest but suggested few changes to increase the length of his role, as per the close sources. Once the discussions turn fruitful, the team will announce the cast and crew officially. Keerthy Suresh will be playing the role of Savitri and Samantha Ruth Prabhu will be seen in an important role.
