Actress Sri Devi is a demi goddess to many of her admirers and she maintained a successful image in all three languages, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi for more than two decades since her debut as a lead in 1977 with Bharathi Raja’s Pathinaru Vayathinile, and the same year she entered Telugu with the remake of the film, Padaharella Vayasu, in the direction of K. Raghavendra Rao. Raghavendra Rao immediately cast her opposite NTR in Vetagadu and the movie became a big hit. She became the top actress in Telugu with the movie and she continued to be so till her last Telugu film, Govinda Govinda in 1994. She did not act in another South Indian movie, after she took a break in 1997 to marry Boney Kapoor, the Hindi producer.
The actress completed 50 years, as she debuted at the age of 4 in Tamil Cinema as a child actor and acted with Sr. NTR in Badi Panthulu in 1960’s as his grand daughter and the same actress played heroine beside him in many of his blockbusters after 1977, Vetagadu. She entered Hindi with Himmatwala in 1983 and Nagin films made her a popular star. With Mr. India and many films to her credit she maintained successful career in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu as well. In 2012, she acted in English Vinglish and then she is back on screen with MOM this year. The movie is releasing on 7th of July and the actress wanted to share her happiness about the long career and talk about the new film as well.
She said, “ It is my directors resolve to work with me repeatedly that made me push myself and give my best to the challenges they threw at me. I had to look my best as a glam doll in one movie and the same director would ask me to perform in a heavy emotional scene in the next movie. Like that they gave me different roles and it is them and destiny that made me have a long journey in the industry. I believe in destiny more than anything and I take it in my stride whenever I lose an opportunity. I worked in 300 films in my career and I’m happy that my fans accepted me for so long.
“I don’t want to disappoint them and I don’t know how long I will continue acting but I will definitely try to come up with good films like MOM. I acted in Tamil Puli, as I liked my character and I don’t have any reservations to work in Telugu. In fact, when I’m dubbing in Telugu for MOM I did not feel like woking for a dubbing movie. I’ll act in any language film if I like the script and my character as I’ve to answer to my fans who love me to death. My husband like to watch me in movies and he encourages me to do more and more. He watches all of my movies and I feel awkward when my kids do so.”
