Singer AR Rahman Trolled Over Language Dispute with Wife

When singer AR Rahman wanted his wife to speak to him in Tamil rather than Hindi, internet users swiftly criticised him.

The renowned singer and composer Rahman has frequently spoken in favour of the Tamil language, and a similar situation occurred when the legendary artist asked his wife Saira Banu to speak in Tamil rather than Hindi at an event in Chennai. Many people on the internet were incensed when the same video suddenly became viral on social media.

Rahman has spent more than three decades working in both the South and Bollywood industries. For those who are unaware, AR Rahman and Saira’s marriage was organised by his mother when they got hitched in 1995.

According to The Indian Express, a video on Twitter showed AR Rahman receiving a prize at the Vikatan Cinema Awards. The performer then asks his wife Saira Banu to join him on stage for a few remarks and to accept the prize. When collecting the trophy from the legendary musician, Rahman, his wife is seen getting upset and hugging her husband. The singer asks her to speak in Tamil rather than Hindi as she was about to take the microphone from Rahman’s wife. The audience is then informed by an obviously uneasy Saira that she is sorry but she can not speak Tamil fluently. Therefore, I kindly ask for your forgiveness. His voice is one of my favourites, so I am incredibly delighted and excited. His voice made me fall in love. I’m done.

Users on social media wasted no time in criticising AR Rahman. She didn’t speak Hindi or Tamil, and I think that’s the finest thing she could do there, said one of the users. She spoke English since both North and South Indians speak it as a common language.

Another shared, “A very sensible lady! She speaks the language which she is most comfortable in! I would, too. Perhaps we all should!” The next one tweeted, “I don’t have problem with Tamil its bas close to my heart as all other Indian languages but why not Hindi and why any foreign language? Are we still in the communal Era?”

One user shared, “Scary goat @arrahman ..filled with inferiority complex remember you became popular because of Hindi audience, don’t divide India you will not be successful mind you.”

Another said, “AR Rahman should be aware of his iconic stature and not play identity politics over language religion and caste. Why can’t his wife speak in whatever language she wants
