Sigma arrives as the directorial debut of Jason Sanjay, son of Vijay, and naturally carries curiosity because of the talent and resources behind it. Starring Sundeep Kishan in the lead, the film attempts to blend action, crime, comedy, and a treasure-heist setup. Faria Abdullah plays the female lead in this film, which hit the screens today. Let’s review it here.

Sigma Story:

Guru (Sundeep Kishan) is struggling with financial problems and is desperate to save a library that carries an emotional connection to his mother. His attempt to make quick money takes him into a casino, where he gets caught up in a much bigger game involving a huge treasure and ₹500 crore of mafia money. How he manages to make money and solve his issues is the basic story of the film.

Performances: Sundeep Kishan gives an honest performance as Guru and handles the action portions reasonably well. However, the character itself is fairly routine and does not give him much scope to explore a different shade. Faria Abdullah plays RJ Sam and gets a limited, unevenly written part. She has very little to contribute beyond a few scenes.

Sampath Raj gets more screen time and brings his usual energy to the villainous role. Shiv Panditt, however, is stuck with a stereotypical antagonist who feels more like a caricature than a threatening presence. Raju Sundaram is brought in for comedy, but the humour does not blend naturally.

Technical Aspects: Thaman’s background score has a few effective moments but largely fails to elevate the action or dramatic sequences. The songs make little impact. The sound recording is one of the better technical aspects. The film has decent production resources, but they are not effectively translated into a visually impressive experience. Krishnan Vasant’s cinematography is adequate, though several portions have a dated visual feel.

Praveen KL’s editing needed considerable tightening, particularly in the second half. Several scenes are stretched unnecessarily, while repeated beats make the film feel even longer. Despite the scale suggested by the story, the production values occasionally give the film a low-budget appearance.

Analysis: Jason Sanjay makes his debut with this film, whose biggest problem is that it feels strangely outdated for a film launching a young director. Jason Sanjay chooses a very familiar commercial template and rarely attempts to give it a fresh identity. The first half spends too much time establishing Guru’s financial troubles, casino activities, fights, villains, and a patchy love track.

For a film promising a treasure hunt and heist, the lack of genuine excitement becomes noticeable. The interval fight provides a brief spark, but it is not strong enough to rescue the proceedings. The second half moves into the actual heist territory, yet the writing becomes increasingly illogical. Characters travel abroad, enter dangerous situations, and attempt a massive operation with surprisingly little resistance. Instead of creating suspense, the screenplay repeatedly circles the same ideas.

The villains are another weak link. Their motivations and behaviour often feel artificial, while some serious sequences are interrupted by forced comedy. The abrupt placement of an item song further breaks the flow. The emotional track also fails to connect. The climax is where the film completely loses control.

Instead of delivering a thrilling payoff, the film becomes increasingly exaggerated and confusing. There is nothing wrong with making a straightforward commercial action film, but SIGMA needed sharper writing, stronger characters, and a much more contemporary treatment.

Verdict: Overall, Sigma is a routine action-heist drama that struggles because of outdated writing, weak characterisation, forced comedy, and a tiring second half. Sundeep Kishan puts in an earnest effort, but the film itself offers very little that feels fresh. Sadly, Jason Sanjay’s debut ends in a major disappointment.

Bottom Line: Disappointing debut
