Shankar Dismisses ED’s Action As “Baseless Plagiarism Claims”

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has seized three properties worth Rs. 10 crore belonging to director Shankar. This is linked to an old legal dispute over copyright claims related to his hit film Enthiran. Reports say that Shankar’s properties were attached after allegations that the film’s story was copied without permission.

According to a few reports, Shankar received Rs. 11.5 crore for his work on Enthiran, including the story, screenplay, dialogues, and direction. Following the investigation, the ED took legal action by attaching his properties, drawing major media attention.

Responding to the ED’s move, Shankar strongly denied the allegations, calling them “baseless plagiarism claims”. He said the legal action was a misunderstanding of facts and misuse of the law. He also stated that he had not received any official notice from the ED regarding the property attachment.

This issue started in 2011 when writer Aarur Tamilnadan filed a case, claiming that Enthiran copied elements from his story Jiguba without credit. The case led to an investigation under the Copyright Act of 1957. Reports suggest the ED found “striking similarities” between the two stories, leading to further legal action against Shankar.
