Angry Star Rajashekar’s new film, Sekhar under the direction of Jeevitha Rajashekar has hit the silver screens today. Let’s see how it goes.

Story: Though Sekhar( Rajasekhar) is an alcoholic cop, trusting his sharp investigation skills, the police department depends on him to solve mysterious crime cases. As a sub-plot, Sekhar’s family life will be showcased. Why did Sekhar turn alcoholic? What is his equation with his wife Indhu( Athmeeya Rajan) and daughter Geetha( Shivathmika)? To know that, you have to watch the film in the theatres near you.

Performances: It is good to see Rajasekhar on screen after a brief gap. His makeover look with grey hair and thick beard is good. Performance-wise, the senior actor is decent in a cop role. Not only in investigation scenes but Rajasekhar impresses with his acting in emotional family scenes.

Young actress Shivathmika is cute on-screen and has given a decent performance small yet key role. Though Shivathmika will be seen in a few scenes, she impresses with her acting.

On the other hand, Athmeeya Rajan who did Rajasekhar’s wife role gave a convincing performance. Just like Shivathmika, Athmeeya also appears in a couple of family scenes but her character plays a key role in the second half of proceedings. George Reddy fame Muskaan Khubchandani gave a decent performance in her limited role.

Artists such as Sameer, Abhinav Gomatam, Kishore among others are okay in their supporting roles.

Technicalities: Anup Rubens’ music is good as his background score adds weightage to the key episodes in the second half. The film has three situational songs which are audible on screen. The cinematography by Mallikarjuna Naragani is good as he tried to present the natural locations in and around Araku in an effective manner.

For Rajasekhar’s role, Saikumar gave voiceover. His commendable dialogue delivery adds realistic texture to the film. Editing is decent. Production values for this tight budget movie are okay.

Analysis: Sekhar is an official remake of the 2018 Malayalam film, Joseph. Jeevitha Rajasekhar directs Sekhar. Though Jeevitha narrated the entire first half proceedings on a slow note, the execution of the crucial second half is good.

Though the pain behind Sekhar turning alcoholic is presented in a few episodes, a better detailing would have helped the film even better. Adding to it, Muskaan Khubchandani’s track with Rajasekhar would have been showcased in an even more engaging manner.

To summerize, Sekhar is a crime drama that deals with the loopholes in the medical industry. While Rajashekar impresses with his performance, the second half presentation makes Sekhar a passable watch.

Verdict: Faithful remake!

Rating: 2/5
