The latest Indywood Carnival had been a head Turner event with it’s long list of films, guests, awardees and many more events. But the biggest controversy arose when the event management decided to give an award for the highest grosser of the year 2016.
In 2016, Tollywood saw minimal hits and maximum misses. Sankranthi season started on a high note with Nannaku Prematho becoming a hit, Express Raja standing up in the stiff competition and Soggade Chinni Nayana emerging as a Blockbuster. Next months, saw Kshanam, Oopiri earning at the box office.
But many hopes were riding high on the summer movies like Sardaar, Sarrainodu, A.Aa.., 24, Brahmostavam. In these films, Sarrainodu, A.Aa.. turned out to be the money spinners. Brahmostavam, Sardaar and 24 became heavy loosers and nightmares for the distributors.
Next important season saw few more heroes trying to impress audience like Venky Babu Bangaram, Nani Gentleman. Both films ended up being average grossers and then came the bonanza, Jr. NTR’s comeback to big league blockbuster, Janatha Garage.
Among the money spinners, Nannaku Prematho, A..Aa, Soggade occupied the respectable 5th, 4th and 3rd position while the tussle at the top remains still a mystery. Sarrainodu the summer blockbuster had been the highest grosser of the year till recently, Janatha Garage took over the title. But many started claiming the collections has fake and producers released the official figures to stem down the controversy. According to them, Janatha Garage emerged as the top grosser beating Sarrainodu.
With Indywood awarding Sarrainodu, the controversy resurfaced and many fans started fighting over the genuinity of the collections of both the films. The organisers had to explain that till the commitee took the decision and track the collections it was Sarrainodu that was top. Well, awarding such titles, should have been reviewed carefully and could have been avoided after all it is a film carnival and not an official announcer for who came first and who is second.
