The Academy has sent invitations to actors Ram Charan and Jr. NTR, lyricist Chandrabose, and composer MM Keeravani to become members. Aside from them, the group also includes the director Mani Ratnam and KK Senthil Kumar, who collaborated on SS Rajamouli’s RRR. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has included them to its new roster of invitees.
The actor’s branch now includes Ram Charan and Jr. NTR, who represented India at the Oscars. Additionally, Sabu Cyril has been asked to join the Academy in the category of production design. While the RRR crew is represented by the majority of the members on this year’s Academy list, director SS Rajamouli has been left off. The RRR director, who spent time in Hollywood for two months during marketing, didn’t make the list since Mani Ratnam was chosen from the branch of directors. The list includes MM Keeravani, the Oscar-winning composer of the Naatu Naatu song, and Chandrabose, the song’s lyricist.
Other well-known Indian actors and filmmakers include Haresh Hingoran, Chaitanya Tamhane, Siddharth Roy Kapur, and Karan Johar. Bill Kramer, the CEO of the Academy, and Janet Yang, the Academy President, remarked that they were “proud to welcome these artists and professionals into our membership.”
For those who are unaware, Suriya was the South Asian celebrity invited to join the Academy members list last year. Since South performers and technicians make up the majority of the Academy’s list of members, this is undoubtedly a great time for South film.
RRR made history in March when Naatu Naatu, one of their songs, won the Best Original Song Oscar for 2023. Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava sang the song live as well, while Lauren Gottlieb and the group on stage danced to it. The audience applauded the live performance while standing.
