Ranya Rao has been sentenced to one year in jail in a gold smuggling case worth Rs. 12 crores, creating a huge buzz nationwide.
She was arrested in March at the Bengaluru airport with 14.2 kg of gold by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). During the investigation, several shocking details came to light.
The Advisory Board under the COFEPOSA Act officially gave her a one-year sentence. Although Ranya was granted bail in May since the DRI hadn’t filed a charge sheet yet, her troubles didn’t end there.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached her properties worth Rs. 34 crores. A provisional order has been passed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), making the situation more serious.
This case has surprised many in the film industry and beyond, as Ranya Rao’s involvement in such a major crime was completely unexpected.
