Ram Gopal Varma Sentenced To Jail In Cheque Bounce Case

A Mumbai court finalized Ram Gopal Varma to stay three months in jail for a cheque bounce case. The judgment scheduled for Tuesday was issued in his absence leading the magistrate to issue a non-bailable warrant for his arrest.

RGV was found guilty under the Negotiable Instruments Act which penalizes cheque dishonor due to insufficient funds or exceeding the agreed amount.

The court also ordered Varma to pay Rs. 3.72 lakh as compensation to the complainant within three months or face an additional three months in jail. The case, filed in 2018 by Shree through Maheshchandra Mishra was against Varma’s company.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Varma sold his office. In June 2022, the court granted him bail after he paid a Rs. 5,000 bond. However, Magistrate YP Pujari stated that Varma could not receive a sentence reduction under Section 428 of the CrPC since he didn’t serve any custody time during the trial. The detailed judgment is yet to be released.

A day before Bollywood film director Ram Gopal Varma announced the making of his latest venture “Syndicate” a court in Mumbai convicted and sentenced him to three months of simple imprisonment in a cheque bounce case.
