Raayan is Dhanush‘s latest film which he has written as directed. The film has been dubbed in Telugu and has Sundeep Kishan in a key role. Read our detailed review here.
Story: Raayan (Dhanush) is a lower middle class man who lives with his two brothers and a sister. The area he lives is dominated by two goons and Raayan’s brother played by Sundeep Kishan gets into a fight with one of the gang members and this creates a crazy twist in the film. Raayan has option to clean up the gangs to save his brothers. But in all this, he creates a big enemy in the form of S J Suryah. How he saves himself is the basic story of the film.
Performances: Raayan is written and directed by Dhanush and he plays the sheet anchor’s role. He is silent in the film for the most part but things change on a voilent note in the second half and he delivers a crazy performance. Sundeep Kishan gets a solid role and he was amazing. Dhanush showcased him in an impressive avatar.
Kalidas Jayaram is also very good in his supporting role. Dushara Vijayan plays the sister role and she was also good. S J Suryah is the main villain and he was quite effective. Prakash Raj as the cops and Selvarghavan in a supporting role was effective.
Technical Aspects: One of the biggest assets of the film is the music and background music by A R Rahman. He elevated the scenes to the next level with his score. The production.design is amazing as the mass areas of Chennai area showcased well. The camerawork, Telugu dubbing and editing are decent enough. The writing by Dhanush is just about okay and has nothing special.
Analysis: Raayan has been written and directed by Dhanush. This is his second film as a director and he does well for the most part. The set up is routine and the conflict is nothing new.
But the manner in which Dhanush has showcased the action and drama is one of the highlights. The story of siblings and how they get tangled in chaos of mafia and how a brother comes out shining is shown effectively.
But the reason for which the brothers go against each other looks a bit silly in the film. The reason for doing so has not been showcased properly. The first twenty minutes of the film is quite slow and does not create any impact.
Raayan clicks up from the pre interval and engages audience till the end. The action showcased is top notch and there are so many mass moments which the B and C centre audience will love.
There is a lot of crime and the film is not for family audience. Dhanush has taken a simple subject and gave his own touch to the film with a decent narrative. He gives a solid performance and holds your attention for the most part.
Verdict : Overall, Raayan is an action packed mass drama with great performance and solid action. But the story and conflict is quite weak and make this film and okay watch for action movie lovers this weekend.
Bottom line – Just for massy action
