Priyanka Chopra addressed colourism in Bollywood and expressed regret about appearing in advertisements for skin-lightening creams early in her career.

Priyanka Chopra faced colourism during her early years in the film industry and has spoken about being lightened for the screen in many films. She also expressed regret for being a part of ‘harmful’ skin fairness advertisements in the mid-2000s that promised young women a better future if they were fairer. Priyanka also admitted that after she joined the film industry, the narrative began to shift, particularly with the introduction of social media. She credited her generation with speaking out against harmful stereotypes of Indian discrimination.

The actor went on to say that this was something that Indians had been taught about since they were children. “When I started in the film industry, if you were fair, you were guaranteed success or casting, but if you were darker… and I’m not even that dark. It was like, “Well, let’s lighten you up,” for darker girls. Many movies made me feel better. “On the podcast Armchair Expert, she told Dax Shephard. She revealed that makeup and lighting made her appearance lighter than she was on screen. Saif Ali Khan and Neha Dhupia were also part of Priyanka’s fairness cream campaign, and a series of ads featured the three actors in a love triangle.

Priyanka has moved to Los Angeles with her husband, singer Nick Jonas, and daughter, Malti Marie Jonas. In 2021, she appeared as Sati in the Hollywood sci-fi film The Matrix Resurrections. She will also appear in the rom-com Love Again, which will be released next month, and the Prime Video Citadel.
