Santosh Sobhan is trying hard to impress with back-to-back films in his career. His new film is Prem Kumar which has been released today. Read our review to know how the film is.

Story: Prem Kumar(Santosh Sobhan) tries hard to get married but fails most of the time. The one whom he wanted to marry liked a hero named Roshan who elopes with him. In a few days, Prem Kumar becomes a breakup artist and spoils weddings for a living. This is also the time the girl whom he wanted to marry, Netra(Roshini Singh) comes back to him and asks Prem to cancel a wedding as her own finance is cheating on her and is all set to marry again. At such a time, Prem Kumar makes a plan to spoil the wedding and win Netra’s love. How will he do this is the story.

Performances: Santosh Sobhan is the only solace in the film. He tries hard to impress and makes things look better with his performance. If not for his performance, the film would have been even worse. Heroine Roshini Singh is decent but was weak in the emotional part. Sudarshan as Daddy brings a few laughs here and there and the hero’s friend, Krishna Teja was good in her role. The guy who played Rising Star Roshan needs acting lessons as he was worse.

Technicalities: The film’s music is decent and all the songs that come in the second half. The camerawork is good and the manner in which the film has been showcased in a decent manner looks good. The writing is decent as the story has scope for good comedy and romance. But that is not used properly. The second half of the film needs a bit of editing as it is a bit lengthy. The production design is good and so are the dialogues which have been written well.

Analysis: Prem Kumar is a comedy caper and is about a man who is unlucky in marriage. How he meets the girl he loves who asks him a favor to arrange her marriage by breaking someone else’s wedding is interesting on paper. But Abhishek Maharshi’s narration lacks focus in many areas. He tries to add so many subplots and the manner in which he showcases the film is not up to the mark.

When it comes to the hero and friend scenes, the film looks good. But when it comes to the other part of the man who plays the star Roshan, the film starts looking silly. The plot is a bit twisted and should have been explained a bit more clearly in the second half. That does not happen and Prem Kumar goes for a toss. Things look good in the second half but the realization scenes of the heroine are not that great.

In just a few scenes, the heroine changes her stance and decides to marry the villain who cheated her. Such scenes lack impact. Santosh Sobhan still manages the show with his solid comedy timing and is a treat on screen. But he too is helpless as director Abhishek has not focused on the emotional content of the film and showed more grip on comedy.

There are so many cringe-worthy scenes in the climax and there is no seriousness in the film. If the narration would have been more focused and on point, the film would have been a passable watch but that does not happen. The only solace of the film is the hero and his friend track which hangs the audience to their seats. Barring this, nothing much happens in the film.

Verdict: Overall, Prem Kumar is good on paper but is filled with faulty narration and over-the-top scenes. The second half makes some sense but it is too late by then and even though Santosh Soban tried hard, he could not salvage the film.

Bottom Line: Over-the-top comedy
